Last week I talked about protein shakes (go back to the post here), now it's time to focus on another type of shake. A shake that almost everyone could benefit from drinking: complete nutritional shakes.

Let’s be honest, as a whole (and I realize this is a stereotype), our country does not rate high on the list of “healthy” countries when it comes to our diets. We aren't geting the nutrition we need! The amount of fast food, processed foods, and artificially enhanced foods that are consumed in the US is mind blowing. It blows me away that our governments still allows ingredients in our foods that have been banned in other countries!

Instead of grabbing for an apple when we're hungry, we grab a handful of chips.

And instead of drinking water when we’re thirsty, we grab a soda.

We're Making Choices That Lead to Obesity

My greatest concern in the foods that are most readily available to us, and the choices we make, is the fact that we have one of the highest obesity rates in the entire world. The Center for Disease Control found that as of 09/2016, approximately 36.5% of American adults are obese.

That means that 1 in 3 adults are obese. That doesn’t even take into account those that are considered “overweight” based on the body mass index (BMI).

As a Nurse Practitioner, every day I see patients who have health conditions that could have been prevented. How? Exercise.

But even more critical to one’s health and well-being is how you're fueling your body…
  • What are you eating?
  • How much are you eating?
  • Are you getting all of the nutrients you need?

One of the most worrisome aspects when it comes to poor nutrition is obesity. So what does that really mean? Is it all about the number on the scale? No.

The Number on The Scale Doesn't Tell You How HEALTHY You Are

I never ever coach my challengers that they need to be “skinny,” because a number on the scale should in no way shape or form determine your worth or your strength.

Your weight doesn’t measure your mental toughness. It doesn’t measure your level of compassion or work-ethic. The number on a scale doesn’t reflect what is going on inside your body at a cellular level.

That number doesn’t reflect whether or not your body is getting the nutrients it needs every single day.

The number on a scale, to me, is relatively useless, but it does help to determine if someone is considered “obese” based on the BMI calculator. Again though, it’s not about being overweight or obese. It’s about being undernourished, malnourished, and/or at risk for adverse health outcomes in the years ahead.

So, no. It’s not about the weight or number on a scale. It’s about being healthy and ensuring your body is getting what it needs to keep you living a long and fulfilling life.

The risks of obesity aren't worth it

Obesity has been associated with certain preventable conditions such as type 2 diabetes heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), sleep apnea, strokes, some cancers, and more. Some studies have shown that obesity has an effect on overall quality of life too. See CDC for more info.

Beyond all of this, and even more heartbreaking, is that the childhood obesity rate in the United States continues to grow. In 2011-2014 the CDC reported that for children ages 2-19, the obesity rate was approximately 17%. That’s 12.7 million children and adolescents who will be at increased risk for the many preventable health outcomes mentioned above.

Surgery isn't always the answer... nutrition is!

It truly breaks my heart to see someone feel as though bariatric surgery is their last resort. Some of these people though, absolutely believe that surgery is their ticket to better health because it will result in weight loss. And while this may be true for some, I fear that so many of these patients simply have never had enough guidance when it comes to proper nutrition, healthy weight loss or an exercise regimen that is right for them. So many of these patients simply haven’t had the right support or tools to help them achieve successful, maintainable, and healthy weight loss.

Getting Proper Nutrition From a Shake

Let me be clear, this blog is not about promoting Shakeology as a weight loss shake. It’s not about insinuating that Shakeology can cure obesity. No. This blog is intended to inform you of the benefits of a complete nutrition shake, as so many of us are nutrient deprived. Even people with a normal or low BMI can be nutrient deprived. And that is why a complete nutrition shake, such as Shakeology, plays such an important role no matter what the number on the scale says!

“But I already drink a protein shake.”

I can’t tell you how many times I hear this when I begin to tell people about Shakeology. I’ll be honest, when I was first introduced to Shakeology, I thought it was just like any other shake out there. And by shake, I mean protein shake. So you might ask this next question...

“Well, what category does Shakeology fall under?”

I haven’t tried all the other nutrition shakes out there. Why is that? First, there are way too many out there to try them all! And second, thankfully, I found Shakeology early. It was by pure luck that I came across Shakeology before trying any of the others. And now that I know what I do, I’m so happy that I haven’t tried the others. I’ve noticed that there are many ingredients in some of the other nutrition shakes on the market that are not healthy, have limited nutritional value, and/or have been associated with adverse health outcomes. Yeah, seriously.

I’m not going to go into every ingredient of every shake there is on the market. What am I going to share are the top things I’ve found are in other shakes that I don’t think most people should be consuming.

  • Whey protein concentrate
  • Soy protein isolate
  • Sucralose (i.e. Splenda), fructose or other artificial sweeteners
  • Synthetic vitamins & minerals
  • Carrageenan
  • Hidden sources of MSG

My Experience With Shakeology

Before drinking Shakeology, I ate relatively healthy. Although, I now realize that I wasn’t nearly getting the nutrients my body needed. And this all became even more important when I had my daughter, Brooklyn, and was breastfeeding her.

When I showed my OB and Pediatrician the ingredients in Shakeology, they advised me that I absolutely could continue drinking it while breastfeeding my daughter. In fact, they told me that Shakeology actually contained even more nutrient vitamins & minerals than the whole-food based prenatal vitamins I was taking. As a result, I could replace my prenatal vitamin with Shakeology. Caveat: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please talk with your specific health care provider for their approval!

So about a year later, when we decided we were ready for another round of IVF in hopes of growing our family, I reviewed my Shakeology with my fertility specialist too. She told me the same thing: my Shakeology can be used as my prenatal vitamin. The only difference while pregnant, was that I had to add additional folic acid, and by choice, DHA (fish oil).

Let me repeat that: my Shakeology replaced my prenatal vitamin. Are you shocked? I was, too. But it’s one of the many reasons I believe that there is no other complete nutrition shake out there that can even come close to comparing to Shakeology when it comes to the health benefits, nutritional value, and taste.

I can happily say that the IVF treatment ended in success (you may have seen my previous posts about it!). Our son, Jameson, is now 9 months old, and some of my fellow Coaches call him a Shakeology baby! Why? Because I never once took a prenatal vitamin while I was undergoing fertility treatments, pregnant, or now while breastfeeding him—Shakeology is all I needed!
